Committed To Your Safety
Safety Philosophy of Honda in Greenville, SC at Breakaway Honda

When you purchase or lease a Greenville, SC Honda car, truck, or SUV, you are not just getting the reliability of a Honda vehicle. You are also getting the safety of one as well. Not just the safety of Honda drivers and passengers, but also that of the occupants of other vehicles and even that of pedestrians who may find themselves in the path of a Honda. Safety for everyone is a tenant of the safety philosophy of Honda here in Greenville, SC at Breakaway Honda, and on this page, you will learn what we are doing in order to make our world just a bit safer.
Safety Commitment

Drivers, passengers, other drivers, and pedestrians benefit from the numerous safety features included in our Honda vehicle, many of which come as standard equipment. Here is the list:

3-Point Seat Belts: All Honda vehicles feature standard 3-point seat belts in every seating position.
Dual-Stage Multiple Threshold Front Airbags: When these airbags are deployed during a significant crash, they can inflate at different rates depending on crash severity, seat belt usage, and/or other factors.
Occupant Position Detection System (OPDS): If this innovative system detects a child or small adult sitting in the front passenger seat, it will prevent the front passenger side airbag from deploying. The airbag will reactivate once the person has moved out of the way of the deployment path of the side airbag. This system is standard on every Honda with front side airbags and is not even required by law or other federal regulation.
Side Curtain Airbags: As of 2008, every row of every Honda vehicle is protected by side curtain airbags, including our light trucks, which feature a rollover sensor in the unlikely event of a vehicle rollover.
Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE): Nearly every Honda vehicle is built using the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, which distributes crash energy more evenly through the front-end of the Honda by spreading it through a network of connected structural elements. This system not only keeps you safer, but also keeps people in other vehicles safer by distributing crash energy more evenly through them as well.
Rear Crush Zone: Similar to ACE, the rear crush zone absorbs and dissipates energy during rear crashes.
Exterior Design: No one likes to think about their vehicle hitting a pedestrian, but here at Honda, we have to do just that in order to work more to protect them in the event that something like this occurs. That is why the hoods, fenders, and windshield wiper systems of Honda vehicles have all been designed to help reduce pedestrian injuries.
Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS): This system prevents the brakes of your Honda from locking up during a sudden braking scenario, thus allowing the driver to maintain steering control while braking.
Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA): Sometimes you have to turn sharply, possibly to make a sharp turn or even to avoid an animal or pedestrian. VSA with traction control detects and corrects understeer or oversteer, allowing the driver to maintain control over their steering. Starting in 2012, all Honda models will feature a new advanced 4-channel VSA system that will help drivers maintain control, even on low-traction surfaces.
Active Front Head Restraints: During a rear-end crash, these restraints move forward and up in order to help decrease the possibility of whiplash or other neck injuries.
LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children): Every second row of a Honda vehicle includes this special child-seat mounting system and child-seat tether anchors. It allows you to mount your LATCH-compatible child seat to the vehicle seat without using the seat belts.

Real World Research

Honda strives to learn from real-world crashes and see what can be done to improve vehicle safety. The Honda Innova Fairfax Hospital CIREN Center in Virginia sends Honda data about real vehicle collisions. In 2000, the company opened the first-ever indoor multi-directional crash test safety facility in the world. Located in their major R&D center in Japan, this major league baseball field-sized facility allows Honda to perform crash tests from many different directions, at different speeds, and even between vehicles of different sizes. Meanwhile, Honda added a new Automotive Safety Research Facility, which includes 2 of the most advanced indoor crash safety research facilities in the world, to their R&D center in Ohio in 2003. It was here they created the first pitching sled test in the world, which simulates how the rear end of a vehicle lifts up in a frontal crash.
Future Technologies

Engineers at Honda are working hard to create pre-collision safety technologies that will help keep crashes from happening. One of these technologies is the Collision Mitigation Braking System (CMBS), a world-first that utilizes millimeter wave radar technology to help identify a possible collision. The driver is warned of danger via visual and audio warnings and an automatic seat belt tug. If the crash cannot be prevented, and even if no alerts were given prior to the crash, the front seat belts automatically retract and braking force is automatically applied to lessen vehicle speed and crash severity. This system is included on the Honda FCX Clarity.
